Abandoned on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway when he was a child, Muhammad overcame immense personal setbacks to find success as a boxer. He became known for his thrilling action and persistence in the ring. He won the light heavyweight championship in 1979 and a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1988.
