1. Eastern State Penitentiary Terrace Garden Marker
The penitentiary's 8,000-square-foot terrace garden was created in 1989. A group of neighborhood volunteers, organized by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) and the Fairmount Civic Association, joined to transform a weedy eyesore into a neighborhood landmark. The sunny, south-facing location presents both rewards and challenges to the gardeners, who continued to meet once a month to maintain the space.
Highlights of the garden include:
Feather reed grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora) 'Karl Foerster'
Sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium)
Maryland golden aster (Chrysopsis mariana)
Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia)
Fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica)
Arrowwood viburnum (Viburnum dentatum)
Cranberrybush viburnum (Viburnum opulus)
Blackhaw viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium)
For more information, to volunteer, or to make a donation in support of the garden, please visit the PHS website at PHSonline.org.
