Additional commentary.
1. Name of Hotel, Cost of Renovation
The hotel was built and opened as the Colorado Hotel in 1927. In the late 1930s it became the Hotel Crawford and remained so until about late 1956/early 1957. Mr. Ed Baker bought the hotel and completed a $250,000.00 complete renovation. It opened as the Baker Hotel in 1958.The Baker at one time had both a coffee shop and restaurant. The restaurant was large enough to accommodate large banquets, complete with a dance floor. There were several businesses that met the guests' needs located in a 'mini mall' on the ground floor. It had a heated swimming pool with cabanas and a large patio area adjacent to the pool.
The Baker Mural was commissioned by Mr. Baker and was completed by Jack White, a commercial artist in 1959. It depicts and serves as a basic historical timeline for Mitchell County and Colorado City from the time of the Comanches until 1959. Jack White never came to Colorado City nor Mitchell County until he delivered the mural to be hung in The Baker Restaurant. The Baker Mural is now located at the Heart of West Texas Museum in Colorado City. The baker served as the location and backdrop for the 1986 film, Shadows on the Wall.
