Log Smoke House
1990
This rare and unique log smoke house or "smoker” measuring 17 feet in circumference at it's base and weighing nearly a ton was donated to the agricultural society by Mrs. Giulia Pember of CR 49, Scott Twp.
Being the "second piece” of the tree, it was hand hollowed and made prior to 1889 from a Sycamore Tree which grew in Pember's Woods for probably one hundred and fifty years or more! (The first piece went to a neighboring farm.)
It was used on the Pember Farm near Rollersville until the 1950's.
According to the donor, Sugar Maple Wood was used to "smoke” the bellies, side meats and hams of as many as seven hogs at one time, usually between Christmas and New Years.
It was transported to these grounds by, (then) fairboard director Bernard Lehmann of CR11, Kansas, Ohio August 1990.
