The Gus Grissom Boyhood Home is a museum honoring how Astronaut Virgil I. (Gus) Grissom was able to come from humble beginnings in the small Southern Indiana town of Mitchell, Grissom to become one of the prolific national heroes of his time — one of the country's original seven astronauts, the second American in space, the first American in space twice, the first man to maneuver a spacecraft and a commanding member of the first Apollo crew with its sights on the moon.

2. Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom.
Virgil Ivan Grissom was born in the small town of Mitchell, Indiana, on April 3, 1926. Grissom started school at Riley grade school. His interest in flying began in that time, building model airplanes. His first jobs were delivering newspapers for The Indianapolis Star in the morning and the Bedford Times in the evening. He also worked at a local meat market, a service station, and a clothing store in Mitchell. Grissom started attending Mitchell High School in 1940. Although he excelled at mathematics, Grissom was an average high school student in other subjects. He graduated from high school in 1944.
