World War II was caused by Germany’s expansion program initiated by Hitler. England and France declared war on Germany September 3, 1939. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Setting off war in the Pacific. The United States declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941. Within a few days Hitler declared war on the United States. The European War came to an end when Italy surrendered on September 3, 1943 and Hitler on May 7, 1945. Japan’s surrender on September 2, 1945 ended the war in the Pacific Theater of operations. There were 292,131 Americans KIA. 115,185 non combat casualties, and 670.846 WIA. Civilian casualties, world wide in this war is estimated at 30,755,000. Estimated cost of war $262,259,000,000.
