1. Impoverished Supplicant Marker
Inscription.  
Two major, interrelated themes are found repeatedly among Stahlman's writings and engravings. First, he appears to embrace his impoverished existence as essential to attaining spiritual purity and as a test of his faith and evidence of divine sanction. Secondly, he seems scornful of those in the community who have not, in his own words, "done their duty in God's providence for my support."

In this engraving Stahlman directly addresses his viewers, assuring them that they will be divinely rewarded if they do their duty and provide for him.

Another rock engraving (Rock 6, pictured above) presents Stahlman's personal ledger of expected donations. Letters represent names of people he knows. Dollar amounts represent the amount of money he is expecting to receive from them.

"During the autumn of 1912, I suffered some extreme privations and hardships. For eleven weeks, I had not a spark of light in the shanty because I did not have 6 cents to buy a half gallon of oil. My clothes except a ministerial suit and good hat, were shabby and ragged. My best shoes were a pair of low cloth ones which had been all worn out at
