1. The Golden Gate Bridge Marker
Inscription. The side view (elevation view) of the Golden Gate Bridge shown here in bronze is 1:2,000: the actual bridge is 2,000 times larger. The distance between the actual towers is 4,200 feet (1,280 m), which set the world record for the longest span when the Bridge was completed in 1937.

The profile of the Golden Gate Strait seafloor is the clue to why the span had to be so large. Locating the two towers together to reduce the span would have requires constructing their foundations in much deeper water.

The three-dimensional model of the south tower is 1:750 scale. The height of the two Golden Gate Bridge towers above sealable is 746 ft (227 m). The foundation of the south tower extends 110 ft (33 m) below the surface of the water into the bedrock.

The modeling or sculptural shape of the towers is in the Art Deco style. The two legs of each tower have angular, slanted forms at the level of each horizontal strut, rather than rising strait up. The sunlight and shadows on the towers, as well as how they appear at night when they are lit from below, accentuate this architectural detailing.
