a railroad line to Ajo. It had been debated for some time whether to connect Ajo directly to Tucson by 132 miles of track or to a Southern Pacific Station at Gila Bend, forty-two miles away. The route through Gila Bend won. Under Greenway's direction, work began on building the line to Ajo and in January 1916, the Tucson, Cornelia & Gila Bend Railroad reached the town.
