John Crawfis, Fairfield County native and son of Otho Crawfis, first white settler in 1831 in Blanchard Township, Putnam County, bequeathed two grants of $25,000 and five acres for schools in Fairfield and Putnam counties.
Crawfis College, Putnam County, a brick two-story. twelve-room building with auditorium, science laboratory, grade and recitation rooms, constructed for $11,000, and two dormitories at $2,087, provided for "common branches, high school, teacher and business training.
Courses included commercial, elocution, German, mathematics, penmanship, shorthand, telegraphy, typing, violin, language. piano, science.
