house was built by Newton Whitaker, whose family was among the earliest settlers of Mulberry and Lincoln County. Robert Lee Motlow – whose wife, Hulda Daniel Motlow, was distiller Jack Daniel's niece – bought the house in 1902. An October 1909 tornado destroyed nearly all of the second story, which was later rebuilt. A small rear addition was added in 1960. Architecturally, the two-story brick house is based on an I-house plan with Greek Revival and Italianate design elements.
