Inscription.  The 1902 opening of Nelson's new Dominion of Canada offices for postal, customs and inland revenue at 502 Vernon street was a huge step up from the tent that first housed Nelson's postal service. The building, constructed of Spokane brick and local granite, calcite and marble, clearly reflected the pride of a growing community. The Dominion architect's plans for the Romanesque design revealed a building of quality, from the coal bunkers to the caretaker's quarters, with the post office and customs house between. In 1962, the City of Nelson opened the renovated building as city hall, and stayed for 43 years. The new Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and History opened in 2006, a cultural cornerstone housed in a unique example of Nelson's heritage
