St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church
Organized in 1819 by Dudley Brooks, a freed slave, this congregation was originally known as First Free Mission Baptist Church and is among the state's oldest continuous African American congregations. Through the years, numerous hurricanes have either seriously damaged the church buildings or destroyed them entirely. The church burned in 1971, and the current structure was built the same year. The name was changed to St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in 1874.
