Howard W. Salton
June 23, 1923 - October 30, 1944
Private First Class (PFC) Salton was born and raised on Grand Island. He attended Rural School #3 in 1931 and was a member of Sidway School's 8th grade graduating class in 1938.
PFC Salton enlisted in the Army in January 1943, went overseas in June 1943 and served in Sicily, North Africa, and the Anzio Beachhead. As a member of the Infantry of the 45th Division, he was injured in action during the invasion into Southern France and died as a result of his wounds two days later.
PFC Salton had made his home with his grandparents, Grand Islanders Anna and George Ziehm, and a Memorial Service was held in Trinity Church. He was laid to rest in the Hamden Cemetery, Hamden, NY, Delaware County.
