Francis K. Goodchild

Sergeant (Sgt.) Francis King Goodchild, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Goodchild of Sandy Beach, was inducted into the army at Fort Niagara in 1943. He served in an Infantry Unit in General George Patton's 3rd Army.
Sgt. Goodchild was sent overseas in 1944 and had been there for 15 months when he was killed in action during the advance into Germany. He was the first resident of Sandy Beach, Grand Island, to be killed in World War II. He was survived by his parents, a brother, Lester C. Goodchild and his fianceé [sic] Irene Haglin. Memorial Services for Sgt. Goodchild were held at Trinity Church.
Sgt. Goodchild was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart by the War Department, received by his parents in May 1945.
