Corporal (Cpl) Joseph E. Muench, a Grand Island resident, enlisted in the Army in 1969. Cpl Muench was a rifleman with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment B Company.

On September 10, 1969, Cpl Muench's Battalion was tasked with a clear and search operation for enemy positions in the highly contested Binh Dinh Province. The operation would go on for a month, during which the Battalion suffered many casualties. On October 4th, Cpl Muench was hit and killed by enemy small arms fire.

For Cpl Muench's many heroic acts during this operation and in the months leading up to his death, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and many other medals for his service.

Cpl Joesph [sic] Muench was laid to rest at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Scio, New York
