Inscription. A blacksmith was one of the most important tradesmen in any community in the 1800s. In addition to making tools, cookware, weapons, farm implements and building materials, the blacksmith was also called upon to repair many critical farm and household items.

Blacksmiths work by heating pieces of wrought iron or steel until the metal becomes soft enough for shaping with hand tools such as a hammer, tongs or chisel.

This blacksmith shop is a replica of the Daniell Blacksmith Shop that existed on Front Street in Mableton for many years. A.F Daniell built this shop in 1883 and it produced steel ladders, ice tongs, flue irons and many other items. Buggies were manufactured at the Daniell Blacksmith shop as well, until Sears and Roebuck began shipping buggies from Chicago.
