Hearthstone

Hearthstone. . In 1838, Robert and Pheriby Mable moved to this site and later purchased 300 acres of land from Denson Melton who had received it from the State of Georgia in a land lottery. They lived with their growing family in a two room cabin on the property. All that remains of that cabin is the hearthstone here, now broken into two pieces. The cabin most likely extended to the south from the hearthstone and was approximately sixteen by sixteen feet., After the plantation plain house was completed the old cabin became the Mable School where Robert Mable's daughter Ruth was a teacher. When the school first opened, tuition was 10 cents a week. The school operated until it burned down around 1900. Ruth Mable taught at the Mable School and other schools in Mableton until her death in 1942., Robert Mable , 1803 - 1885 , Established the Mable farm and lived here until his death. .
