To whom the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations owes recognition for the exhaustive study made of musty records in his untiring effort to keep before the people, at a time when it seemed to be ignored and passing into oblivion, the fact that the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations declared its independence of the British Crown

The First of the Thirteen Colonies to Take Such Action
Upon May 4, 1906 the First Formal Celebration was held in North Smithfield
Upon May 4, 1909 the First Official Celebration was held in Providence
As a tribute of appreciation for his services to his state this park is dedicated to his memory by his fellow townsmen
