Inscription.
This Corliss steam-driven compressor was removed from the engine house/boiler room structure, located near this spot. These types of ammonia compressors were manufactured between 1900 and 1925. The exact date of installation in the Moultrie plant is unknown.

In addition to this state-of-the-art compressor, the engine house/boiler room housed a Gardner-Denver Steam Pump, York Ice Machinery Corporation equipment, and Ingersoll-Rand Imperial Type 10 Air Compressor.

The engine house/boiler room was the heart of the plant’s operation. Records also indicate the plant maintained its own fire department, independent reserve electrical system, and water system.

3. Corliss Steam Engine.
A Corliss steam engine is a steam engine, fitted with rotary valves and with variable valve timing patented in 1849, invented by and named after the American engineer George Henry Corliss of Providence, Rhode Island. Corliss engines were generally about 30 percent more fuel efficient than conventional steam engines. This increased efficiency made steam power more economical than waterpower, allowing industrial development away from millponds.
