A former slave, minister, abolitionist, author and entrepreneur. Born into slavery in Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to what is now known as Ontario, Canada in 1830.
He established a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden, Ontario.
His autobiography is believed to be the interpretation of the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin.
