Inscription. "Wed. Jan. 3, 1866. Have been to work all day at headquarters making out monthly returns for December 1865. Took a list of clothing the boys wanted to draw for January."

The Commissary Sergeants earned a wage of $21.00 per month. Their daily duties involved noting the inventory of food supplies, clothing and equipment for the soldiers. Quartermaster Sergeants, like Andrew Jackson Fisk, also had to keep track of the company's accounts, taking into consideration the army-regulated spending limit for each man; soldiers often traded their rations at the sutler's store for woolen mittens and other goods, or with the local Indian tribes for buffalo robes.

Before the construction of this better-insulated building, the south barracks, when no longer needed to house soldiers, was secured with iron doors and bars on the windows to safely store the food for the fort. A root cellar was later constructed near the commissary sergeant's quarters to store the food at the fort.
