Inscription.
This interim memorial is the first stage of the construction of a permanent memorial to honor and remember the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks, the worst terrorist attack on the United States. On that day, 16 terrorists coordinated the hijacking of four commercial airlines and turned them into weapons to strike at symbolic targets throughout the United States. These attacks drew the United States into the longest war in its history–the Global War on Terrorism.

Here in Arlington, at 9:37am, American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, killing 184 people, ranging in age from 3 to 71 years old. The memorial is located here at Arlington County Fire Department Station 5, as its apparatus and personnel were among the first to respond to the incident.

The interim memorial includes a pentagonal raised bed that is oriented toward the Pentagon, surrounding a structural steel I-beam from the World Trade Center, gifted to Arlington by the City of New York and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to mark the indelible connection with the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. For ceremonies and special days, it will also incorporate flags from the three attack sites: the Pentagon, New York City and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
