Excerpt: "Teatro Apolo is a defunct theatre in Madrid, Spain. It was located on Calle de Alcalá, at the site which is now number 45. Previously, the site was occupied by the Convento de San Hermenegildo, which was sold off in 1836 and demolished in 1870. Theatre construction occurred between 1871 and 1873, with a design by the French architects P. Chauderlot and F. Festau. It had a capacity of 2,500 people. The Apolo and the Felipe theatres were the most important venues for the género chico, a phenomenon which debuted in Madrid and featured one-act performances. 2. Teatro Apolo (Memoria de Madrid, in Spanish).
On the theater's demise (in translation): Pedro de Répide, in his farewell to this theater in 1929, stated: “Ash. Rubbish. Dust. Anything. But it is not a piece of Madrid that is leaving. It is a piece that is ripped off. And when these walls fall where so many feelings nested, when we see the hollow of the place where the Apolo Theater was, we will all feel the horror that something of its core has been taken from Madrid, and this will be a void that cannot be filled with anything , because it was soul and it was illusion at the same time that it was flowing blood and throbbing flesh.”
