Ghost Lines
Colvin Run Mill
| | Great Falls, Virginia | |
The architecture at Colvin Run Mill has changed over time. Remnants of the modifications the Millard family made during their more than 50 years in the Miller's House are still visible.
On the side of the house, you can see an upside-down "V" near the roofline. This is the location of a two-story addition the Millards built to accommodate their growing family. Out back, where a flower bed sits, the Millards built a one-story addition they called "Papa's room." Addison Millard used it as his bedroom later in life when he suffered from white lung and could no longer climb stairs.
[Captions:]
"Papa's room," a one-story addition built in the late 19th century.
This two-story addition probably included bedrooms upstairs and a kitchen and dining area on the first floor.
The 19th-century wooden additions to the Miller's House were removed in 1967, when the Fairfax County Park Authority restored the house to its original appearance.
