In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Botanic Garden's original 1820 charter, the Garden has collaborated with renowned artist Patrick Dougherty to create a custom sculpture to stand throughout the 2020 celebratory year. Over three weeks, Garden employees and volunteers worked with Dougherty to build with willow and locally harvested invasive Siberian elm, Norway maple, and non-native cherry hybrids.
Dougherty, from North Carolina, is known around the world for his installations woven from plant materials. This whimsical sculpture celebrates nature through both materials and visually flowing lines. Over 30 years, Dougherty has built more than 250 sculptures.
