R. Chappelle Matthews. . This Public Service Complex is named to honor R. Chappelle Matthews (1908-1986) who served in the Georgia House of Representatives for twenty eight (28) years representing the district that included the University of Georgia. Representative Matthews was a champion for all programs of the University, but especially public service and outreach. The complex includes the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, the Hoke Smith Building, the Hoke Smith Annex, the J.W. Fanning Building, and the Treanor House and all buildings surrounding it.
