Sal Colangelo took over as head coach of the Bethesda Big Train in 2005, the inaugural season of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, after serving as assistant coach for the team's first six seasons. In his first fourteen seasons as head coach, Sal's Big Train teams won nine regular season championships and seven league championships. Through the 2018 season, he has compiled a record of 404 regular season wins with only 170 losses for an eye-popping winning percentage of .704. In 2011, the Big Train was named the nation's top summer college team by Perfect Game USA, and Sal was named Maryland State Amateur Coach of the Year. At Potomac High School in Woodbridge, Virginia, Sal stole more than 100 bases. He played baseball and football at Virginia Tech from 1991-95.
