Saloons
East Sioux Falls was filled with quarrymen that needed an after-hours hobby. The quarrymen worked hard and played hard. For many, blowing off some steam at the local saloon was a popular pastime.

At a time when temperance and prohibition were gaining popularity, the saloon at East Sioux Falls was thriving. Many neighboring towns were unable to open such establishments due to protesting church goers. Even residents from Sioux Falls boarded the electric trolley line to East Sioux Falls for drinks.

At East Sioux Falls, a bar was always part of the life of the town. The saloon was built before the church. Long after the church had closed its doors, the saloon was still open. The last bar at East Sioux Falls operated until the 1960s.

J.E. Payette
Payette worked for Hubbard and Riley drawing up contracts for the quarry company. While working on a contract for the Whitney mansion in Detroit, J.E. stole almost $2,000 and spent it on women and fancy clothes.

Harry Phillips
Going by the name of Harry Phillips, Edmund Bebro arrived in East Sioux Falls with a Mrs. Thomas and a 3 year old child in tow. Harry spread many lies, conning Judge S.L. Tate out of $500 with false cablegrams from a rich father in England. After the three fled town, the truth was revealed. Mrs. Thomas, having thought her first husband dead, married Edmund and had his child. When the first husband proved to be very much alive, the three fled New York City to Sioux Falls for a speedy divorce.

Scoundrels
Work at the quarries brought many new faces to East Sioux Falls, not all of whom were honest. The backbreaking work combined with the popular saloon business made East Sioux Falls a rough town. Several criminals frequented the town, swindling East Sioux Falls residents. A few of the more
