Edina Veterans Memorial
Remembering that Freedom is Not Free
On June 25, 2010, the first meeting of the Edina Veterans Memorial Committee with twelve volunteer members was held. Alongside valued financial assistance received from the State of Minnesota and the City of Edina, over 400 Edina residents, businesses, and civic organizations contributed dollars and essential services to help bring about this lasting reminder that freedom is not free. The Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 25, 2015.
This Memorial is dedicated to the men and women from present day Edina - and all American communities - who have served, are now serving, or who will serve in the military branches of this great nation. Special recognition has been afforded to the sons of Edina who died in the line-of-duty during times of conflict. Their names are etched into the Memorial's granite base.
The Memorial also acknowledged and honors the families of those who served, and the community that supported them. It is hoped that the generations that follow will remember with pride and gratitude the veterans who served and sacrificed for this country.
The poignant stories of the lives that ended early are told in Edina Veterans Memorial: A Lasting Tribute. This companion reader is available at the Edina Historical Society and Edina libraries and schools.
Where Our Fallen Heroes Resided
A majority of the households with service members who perished during times of conflict trace to the northeast quadrant of present day Edina. The greatest number of casualties occurred during WWII. During that era Morningside and the Country Club District comprised less than 7% of the land of present day Edina, but had 45% of the homes. The map below shows where our hometown heroes resided.
