Inscription.
Grant loved horses, and it seemed as if they loved and understood him. As a toddler he played around the horses at his father's tannery, swinging on their tails and crawling under their bellies. His skills as a trainer and rider made him a legend as a young boy.

He was considered the finest horseman at West Point and the greatest rider in the army. During heavy fighting General Grant remained calm. He rode skillfully under fire, rallying his troops, giving orders, and leading his soldiers on the battlefield from chaos to victory.

When Grant became president at age 47, he could not ride on horseback as fast as when he was younger. He frequently drove his carriage over the speed limit. According to an often-told story, Grant was stopped for speeding one day. Seeing he was the president, the police officer did not want to issue a speeding ticket. Grant insisted that the officer do his duty. After he was fined $20 and his carriage impounded, President Grant walked back to the White House.

Grant's love of horses lasted his whole life. Upon his death, a million people watched as 24 black horses pulled his casket through the streets of New York.
