1. Shelby County Marker
Inscription. Shelby is the state's largest and most populous county, even though a series of yellow fever epidemics in the 1870s severely reduced its population. The county honors Revolutionary War hero Isaac Shelby, who helped to negotiate the 1818 Chickasaw Treaty that is also known as the Jackson Purchase. A transportation crossroads since its founding, Memphis is a hub of river, road, rail, and air distribution. The Father of the Blues W. C. Handy, and "The King of Rock 'n Roll”, Elvis Presley called it home.
