Inscription. At Fort Pillow, a Union garrison of black and white Tennessee soldiers was overcome by Confederates. Nearby is Henning, the boyhood home of Pulitzer winner Alex Haley, who sparked a national understanding of African-Americans with his book Roots. This territory was still held by Chickasaws when it was first surveyed by Henry Rutherford in 1785 beginning at Key Corner. The settlers named it for Colonel James Lauderdale, killed at the Battle of New Orleans.
