Inscription. Haywood, known for its fertility, is named for state Supreme Court Justice John Haywood, the Father of Tennessee History. Brownsville, one of the oldest West Tennessee towns, is on a ridge 344 feet above sea level between the Hatchie and Forked Deer rivers. Both of these rivers carried cotton, still widely grown, to market. Wealthy antebellum farmer James Bond planted 35,000 acres and had his own steamboat. Rock'n roll recording star Tina Turner was born in Nutbush.
