1. Fayette County Marker

Inscription. The level land of Fayette, drained by the Wolf and Loosahatchie, Rivers, honors the French friend of the American Revolution Marquis de Lafayette. Since antebellum plantation years, Fayette, with its neighboring county Haywood has had a majority of African-American inhabitants. The Original Fayette County Civic and Welfare League, guided by Viola and John McFerren and others, led the successful voter registration drive of 1959 and shaped effective resistance to white backlash economic sanctions in the early 1960s.
