1. Madison County Marker
Inscription. Madison honors President James Madison. By 1840 Jackson was a regional cotton depot and it now serves as a railroad hub for West Tennessee. Pinson Mounds is a prehistoric ceremonial site with the second highest mound in the country. Native James Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson transformed the harmonica from a folk novelty to a leading blues instrument. Lane College, formed in 1879, is unique as the only college in Tennessee founded by African-Americans still in existence.
