1. Carroll County Marker
Inscription. After the Chickasaw withdrew from West Tennessee, the influx of settlers seeking good farm land found here, “an unbroken forest infested with bears, wolves, panthers, deer, wildcats, the smaller wild animals, and snakes.” After clearing of their level surface drained by the Big Sandy and Obion Rivers, an agricultural economy grew based in the early years on cotton. Namesake William Carrol was governor for twelve years, longer than any other person. Twentieth century two-term governor Gordon Browning was a native.
