1. Benton County Marker
Inscription. Benton, bordered on the east by the Tennessee River, is made of 80 million year old sand, clay, silt and gravel and 350 million year old limestone, shale, sandstone and chert. This chert preserved near perfect mollusks and bivalve shellfish fossils. From Pilot Knob, General Forrest watched his troops “making havoc among the gunboats and transports” as General Sherman would write describing the Union routing at Johnsonville. The county honors David Benton, early settler and War of 1812 veteran.
