Inscription. North Carolina granted much of this land to her citizens, including James Robertson, in tracts ranging from 1,500 to 5,000 acres. Tipton, bounded on the west by the Mississippi River was named for Jacob Tipton, a casualty in 1791 of the Northwest Territory Indian wars. Surviving houses built by wealthy antebellum cotton planters are silent testimony to Covington’s history as a shipping point for cotton. Randolph, in 1830 “the most important shipping port in West Tennessee,” was a brief rival of Memphis.
