Inscription. “We have met the enemy and they are ours” is the famous message of Commander Oliver Hazard Perry when he met a British fleet in battle on Lake Erie in 1813. Fossils of shell animals that recall Tennessee’s marine millennium in the Silurian era have been well preserved here in Niagara limestone. Modern aquatic experiences include canoe floats on the Buffalo River and waterskiing, fishing, and swimming in the Tennessee River at Mousetail Landing State Park.
