Inscription. Developed in the early 1950's by the Pacific Car & Foundry Company to meet the military's request for a mechanized long-range fire support vehicle, the M53 was accepted for service near the end of the Korean War. Armed with a 155mm M46 gun the six man crew could fire one round per minute at a maximum firing range of 14.6 miles. The vehicle had a maximum speed of 35 miles per hour and a maximum range of 150 miles. As technology improved the Army upgraded to 8-inch howitzer barrels and designated the vehicle the M55. The Marines, however, kept the 155mm design and used it for long-range fire support in Vietnam.
