Inscription. (front)
Lane (1811-1881) began political career as a state legislator, 1837. Served in U.S. Congress, 1840-43 and 1861-67. In 1860, as a part of a Republican Party Strategy to win state offices, Lane was elected governor and served two days before Indiana General Assembly elected him to U.S. Senate; Oliver P. Morton then became governor. Lane lived here 1845 until death.

In 1854, Lane helped unite diverse Indiana political groups into the People's Party to oppose Democratic administration, especially extension of slavery into U.S. territories. People's Party joined Republican Party; Lane was chair of national convention, 1856. Lane helped secure presidential nomination of Abraham Lincoln at 1860 Republican National Convention.
