1. Dr. Thomas Walter Josey Marker
Inscription. A native Augustan, son of former slaves, he worked to support himself and his studies, graduating from Haines Institute and attending Atlanta University prior to earning the M.D. from Howard University Medical School in 1912.

Hired by Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company in Augusta in 1917, he rose to vice president and medical director, supervising, by 1930, the staff of about 100 medical examiners. An accomplished civic leader, a noteworthy churchman, and a generous philanthropist, he raised funds for and personally donated to myriad organizations and causes. A scouter, he received the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service to youth. He spearheaded a campaign in 1950 that resulted in the hiring of Augusta's first six black policemen.

An eminent physician, he served as president of the Stoney Medical Association, president of the Georgia Medical Association, and regional vice president of the National Medical Association. A local high school and boy scout camp bear his name.
