1. Montgomery County Marker
Inscription. Colonel John Montgomery l, believed to have accompanied John Donelson on the River voyage to Fort Nashborough, founded Clarksville in 1784 at the confluence of the Red and Cumberland rivers. Clarksville is named after General George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary War soldier and Indian Fighter who contributed much to the westward movement. Tobacco has long been an important crop, and Fort Campbell Military Reservation became a major economic element in the twentieth century.
