Inscription. Dickson County honors Dr. William Dickson, physician, Tennessee Speaker of the House, and member of Congress. County seat, Charlotte, is named for James Robertson’s wife. Dickson’s industrial heritage dates to iron manufacturing propagated by Montgomery Bell. James Worley, Bell’s slave who was a “most efficient and useful assistant in bringing order out of chaos,” was a prominent African-American iron expert. The Ruskin Cooperative Association (1894-1899) was a socialist utopian community founded Julius Augustus Wayland.
