1. Lewis County Marker
Inscription. Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Pacific Northwest Expedition, either committed suicide or was murdered here in 1809 at Grinder’s Inn on the Natchez Trace. The Trace traverses the county named for this explorer, office, and statesman. Hohenwald, the third county seat, owes its initial prosperity to German-Swiss immigrants of the 1840’s who named it “high forest”. More than 100 acres of Lewis County became a sanctuary for endangered Asian elephants in 1995.
