Inscription. Lawrence County and it’s county seat honor U.S. Navy Captain James Lawrence who, when mortally wounded in the War of 1812, issued the famous order “Tell the men not to give up the ship.” David Crockett State Park interprets a grist mill, the powder mill and distillery owned by the famous Frontiersman before his move to West Tennessee. Around 1870 nearly 300 German families purchased 25,000 acres near Lawrenceburg. Amish people, mainly farmers, established a simple, life here in 1944.
