Inscription. Williamson is named for Dr. Hugh Williamson, Revolutionary War Colonel and Surgeon General of the North Carolina Militia. As early as the 1830s, the county has acquired its enduring reputation for wealthy influential inhabitants. The Battle of Franklin, where in November 30, 1864, five Confederate generals were slain, was one of the bloodiest of the Civil War. The rolling, admirable farmlands, drained by the Harper River, produce good livestock and celebrated horses that feed in limestone enriched bluegrass.
