1. Sumner County Marker
Inscription. Named for Revolutionary War General Jethro Sumner, the county was created by the North Carolina general assembly from the eastern half of Davidson. During the Mississippian period, there were mud-walled villages at Castilian Springs and Saundersville. Pioneers began to settle the area in the 1780s, principally at Mansker’s and Bledsoe’s forts. Gallatin was laid out in 1802. Agriculture was the main source of livelihood until 1950 when industrial development began in a significant scale.
