1. Rutherford County Marker
Inscription. Rutherford County recalls Revolutionary War Major General Griffith Rutherford, whom President Washington appointed to the legislative council of the Southwest Territory, later Tennessee. Murfreesboro has the distinction of occupying the state’s geographic center and was once the capital. In 1766, the river that would bear his name was discovered by Uriah Stone and three others. Less than a century later more than 24,000 men were casualties at Stones River, “one of the most indecisive” battles of the Civil War.
